Both are useful. They serve different needs. Eyewitness I might take, and then more specific recommendations, such as Lonely Planet / Frommer 's / etc
Lonely Planet is better
Either is great. My father told me not to buy, either as it was an old book that he used when he was there and insisted that I use.
If there was anything I could say that it "Drop your weapon!"
Eyewitness guides are more for children of primary school age. The Lonely Planet has more background information and details about the various places and events. Both are great, but everything depends on what you want in the book. My children have several witnesses, the series and love them.
I prefer, because I like the Lonely Planet information - not only basic information, travel, but also information on the history, culture and festivals.
Witness a book would look like before he can help you determine what to observe.
Lonely Planet would be better to use while you are traveling with hotels, restaurants, transportation, open / close, etc. .. while learning a little background.
Just go in limbo ... to Japan without a guide ... and the hand of Japan, the first experiment.
Ask your neighbors and just living from agriculture. not through a book.
go on a branch ... That's where the fruit
